Healthier You: Priceless Legacy

What would you consider the most precious legacy to pass on to your loved ones: a roof over their head, pictures filled with precious memories, financial security, a successful business? These legacies require money, hard work, time, and are subjective to each family's values. There is a legacy that is neither country, age, nor family dependent and leads to living a better life, living longer, being mentally acute, feeling great physically, and being able to support oneself financially. It is the legacy of

When baby boomers grew up, a few kids were struggling with their weight, but most were thin. Today, ONE IN THREE CHILDREN ages 5 to 17 are overweight in America. Seventy percent of these children already have at least one risk for cardiovascular disease; Thirty-nine percent have two or more risks for CVD. In addition, Type II Diabetes, once considered an "age related" disease, is now being diagnosed in our children. Type II Diabetes can lead to other complications such as heart, kidney, eye sight, and loss of limbs. Childhood obesity has become an issue of great concern. Locally, programs like HEAL lead by DHMC, and the National Trails Alliance Passport Program, as well as many schools, are addressing the issue head-on. These programs offer education and support and encourage children to get up and get moving.

Why are our children loosing their health? There are many factors: too much accessible food, "convenience" food, misleading information, Internet, not enough exercise, stress, and the environment. One day at a time, a healthy one year old becomes an obese 9 year old, leading to a unhealthy teenager. Will our children outlive their parents? Not if we continue with this pattern.

So how do we reverse the pattern and give back the priceless health legacy our children deserve? There is hope. Did you know that a simple seven to ten percent decrease in body fat can reduce the risk of heart disease and diabetes in our children by fifty percent? Children are very much influenced by their peers, their environment, and their parents. Family habits greatly affects children's behavior. How? Most behaviors are learned before age 6, but can be re-programmed any time through repetition. By daily demonstration, reinforcement, and support for healthy choices, families can reverse the pattern.

Good choices mean eight to ten hours of sleep each night, learning to handle or reduce stress, eating balanced food with plenty of vegetables and two to three servings of fruits per day, lowering sugar intake, drinking plenty of water, and exercising. Below are a few ideas on how to motivate your children to change their behaviors and make better choices:

Allow video games or tv/movies only on days that your child has exercised

Encourageeducational or physically active video games. For younger kids, there is a free website www.tlskids.com, that teachesgood food choices using a fun game like environment.

Family Dinners - Sit down together for meals and make it a social and educational experience.

Slowly remove the "bad" food choices from your home, replacing them with interesting good choices. Make sure the good stuff, like raw veggies, are always easily available. Most kid like raw vegetables versus cooked... go for it, it is the best source of nutrients, easy to prepare, and cost effective!

Reward with something other than food: a book for good grades, a day-pass to a sports complex, an activity play date with their friends, a dance party, game night, etc.

Explain what is in it for them when making good choices:

MOST IMPORTANTLY, show them, do it with them! Strive toward a healthier lifestyle yourself too!

If you and your teenager need help making these changes, there is a healthy, cost effective, science-based program out there, called TLS Shape-Up, that coaches BOTH PARENTS AND TEENAGERS to change for the better in just 12 weeks! WellTastic coaches are one of the only few coaches certified for this amazing program. WellTastic is bringing TLS Shape Up to the Upper Valley and is currently interviewing interested teenagers and their parents. Contact WellTastic.com for more information or to request an interview. Affordable help is around the corner!

If nothing else, as a role model to your kids, be patient, consistent, live a healthier lifestyle, and highlight how the changes will positively impact their areas of interests. The gift of health is in your hands, a Priceless Legacy for your kids and future generations to enjoy.

Have a WellTastic journey.
